Although available in a range of color temperatures (27/30/35/41K), compact fluorescent sources are not known for their color quality. Rather the main feature of CFLs is energy efficiency, combined with acceptable dimming performance and decent lamp life (15,000 hrs). Because this is a phosphor-based technology CFLs are not capable of producing the narrow, tightly-controlled beams we achieve with other light sources. Available in a several approximately A-lamp sized packages, compact fluorescent sources are used in table lamps, floor lamps, and medium to large aperture downlights.

For those applications where the closest match to compact fluorescent is needed, specify the color temperature closest to that of the CFL lamp being used on the project. 3500K has been popular for CFLs in office and industrial applications. Additionally, USAI Lighting's Color Curve Dimming technology can be utilized for a feature reminiscent of more pleasant halogen products, if so desired: products that color shift to 2200K as they dim.
